over the hill First drive

The first expedition starts with three trucks already in the garage, a winch and planks in the kit, and no finish clock. It is a driving game, not a racing game. You play at your own pace, with no timed input. You drive alone or with up to three friends. Welcome to the Wild asks you to complete the tutorial.

The garage opens with The Protector, The Ding and The Trailrat. All three are Trail class. The Protector is 4.0 m long, origin United Kingdom, wheel 0.80 m, travel 0.55 m. The Ding is 3.7 m long, origin Japan, wheel 0.80 m, travel 0.45 m. The Trailrat is 4.0 m long, origin United States, wheel 0.80 m, travel 0.55 m. None of them is a trail reward. The other 18 trucks are paid by challenge trails.

Where the first trails are

Five wilderness areas ship with the game. Emerald Lake, Gimli Ridge and Asgard Mountain are the Canada side, in The Valhallas: Emerald Lake has 3 trails and 6 cabins; Gimli Ridge has 5 trails and 9 cabins; Asgard Mountain has 5 trails and 9 cabins. Tassili n'Ajjer Desert and Aurès Mountains are the Algeria side: Tassili n'Ajjer Desert has 5 trails and 10 cabins; Aurès Mountains has 5 trails and 9 cabins. Both regions are in the release. You do not have to clear Canada before an Algeria trail.

Emerald Lake is the Canada area with the fewest trails, three, and it is where the first extra trucks are paid. Every Emerald Lake trail abandons at 100 m off the route. El Kalaa South Ascent in Tassili n'Ajjer Desert abandons at 120 m. The other 22 trails use 100 m.

Hermit Trail is the long one: 31 checkpoints, 40 Pebbles, and The Burro, a Workhorse. Windy Joe Trail is 11 checkpoints, 25 Pebbles, and The Trail Burner, a Wagon. Elizabeth Oath Trail is 11 checkpoints and 15 Pebbles, with no truck. Dirt Baptism asks you to complete your first trail.

The rest of the Canada truck rewards, if you keep driving past Emerald Lake:

Open any of those trails on the map. Cabins, crates, scenic spots, and meteorites are on the same sheets. Back to the Cabin asks you to fast travel to an unlocked cabin. New Horizons asks you to find the exit from an area.

Winch, planks, and the rest of the kit

Every tool is already in the inventory. You do not buy a second set, and none of them are hidden in the world. A truck carries them in tool slots: 1 at stock, up to 4 after the slot upgrades. Using a tool empties that slot. It refills the next time you reach the Mechanic, drive into a cabin, or respawn at a cabin. The full behavior of each tool is on the field kit page. For a first drive, these are the ones the ground asks for:

  • Portable winch, three owned. Drops an anchor where nothing else is in reach. Stock winch reach is 10 m.
  • Planks, three owned. A pair of 8 m planks, placed up to 10 m away, for a gap or ground with no grip.
  • Jack, one owned. Flips the truck upright and moves it up to 7.5 m onto about 2 m of clear ground.
  • Repair kit, three owned. Restores 100 of 100 health on your truck or a teammate's within 20 m.
  • Camp tool, one owned. Skips 12 in-game hours in about 44 seconds and restores 25 health on every truck in the session. Everyone has to be together.

First Aid asks you to recover your first vehicle. The truck's own winch is the rope. The portable winch is the anchor you add when that rope has nothing to hook.

What to spend the first Pebbles on

Trails, crates, cabins, scenic spots, meteorites, and photos pay Pebbles. You spend them at the Mechanic, and each purchase belongs to the truck you bought it for. A Handful of Pebbles asks you to collect 100 pebbles. The first stage of every upgrade group costs 25 Pebbles and needs nothing bought before it:

UpgradePebblesEffect
Engine Stage 225Engine tier 2 of your vehicle's class: more torque, power and top speed
Protection Stage 225Impact damage ×0.85, so 15% less per crash
Suspension Level 225Suspension travel +0.08 m
Tires Stage 225Grip +0.08 on every surface
Tool Slot 2252 tool slots
Water Resistance 225Air intake moves to the middle of three points; floods after 10 s under water
Winch Stage 225Winch reach 11.5 m (×1.15)

Winch Stage 2 is the reach bump, from 10 m to 11.5 m. Tool Slot 2 is the second carried tool. Tires Stage 2 adds 0.08 grip on every surface, which is the wet-ground difference covered on the weather page. Later stages cost more and require the stage under them. The Mechanic page has the full ladder.

Enjoy the Journey is a distance mark, not a purchase: drive 20 km in Low Range.

Solo or three friends

A session is 1 to 4 trucks. Online co-op is supported, with full controller support. A gamepad is recommended, and DualSense and DualShock controllers work. After 26.10.19_61ec20e, the largest in-game clock gap between players is 2 minutes. It was 10. The same build makes a portable winch anchor hookable again when it is already inside the radius. Camp still needs the party together. Meteorites split their Pebbles across the winches on them and anyone else within 10 m, so a friend on the rope is part of the payout. The size that falls depends on how many players are in. That table is on the field kit page.

PC, Deck, and PlayStation 5

The game runs on Windows and Linux. It does not run on macOS. It also runs on Steam Deck and GeForce Now. Controller support is full. Steam Cloud saves are on, and there are 62 achievements.

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2 are dated 2027. There is no PS5 build to install today. Right now you play on Windows, Linux, Steam Deck, or GeForce Now. The current build is v26.10.19_b8daf8d. If the ground draws invisible on an older GPU, including GTX cards that still meet the minimum spec, 26.10.16_57fb763 already includes that fix. You do not add a launch option for it.

Minimum spec and languages

The minimum spec was tested at 1920×1080. The recommended spec asks only for a 64-bit processor and operating system. Linux uses the same processor, 8 GB of RAM, the same graphics cards, broadband, and 4 GB of storage.

Price on the way in

The base game is $24.99 USD, €24.99 EUR, and £22.49 GBP, and it launched with 20 percent off for 14 days. On 21 October 2026 the US price was still $19.99. The soundtrack is separate at $9.99 USD. The Supporter Edition is $9.99 USD and adds an in-game name tag, exclusive cosmetics, a unique camping site, printable maps, and a set of 4K wallpapers. The three together cost $37.99 USD. Discount windows end. That $19.99 is the US price on 21 October 2026, and the discount can end.

Photos before you garage the truck

The in-game camera fills a wildlife compendium and can also shoot the landscape. Making Memories asks you to take 20 photos. Species and the wet-weather rule are on the wildlife list. A sky changes on its own schedule. If the light is the problem, the Cloud Clearing Bell sets the sky to Clear for the whole session, and the camp tool is what skips the night.
